Are dogs colorblind? Do cats always land on their feet?
There’s a lot we don’t know about our furry best friends! In today’s blog post, we’re debunking a few common myths about pets. Learn more, and if you’re looking for an emergency vet in Birmingham, contact Steel City Emergency Vets.
Myth: Dogs Are Color Blind
While it’s true that dogs are partially color blind, they can see yellow, green, and blue or a combination of those colors. Dogs rely primarily on motion and brightness for their vision, so color detection is less important.
Myth: One Human Year = Seven Dog Years
Dog owners often think of their pet’s age in “dog years,” which they calculate by multiplying each year by seven. However, the best way to think about your dog’s age is to think about it as a part of their lifespan, rather than the number of years they’ve been alive. Split the dog’s lifespan into six stages: puppy, junior, adult, mature, senior, and geriatric. Different dogs and dog breeds mature at different rates, and it can take some dogs less than a year to become an adult while others may take nearly six.
Myth: Cats Always Land On Their Feet
While cats are very good at correcting their body’s position when they fall, they can still fall on their side or back! It depends on the agility of the cat and the height of the fall.
Myth: Dog’s Mouths Are Cleaner Than Human’s Mouths
If you enjoy puppy kisses, you might want to believe this myth, but it’s just not true! A dog’s mouth contains almost as much bacteria as a human’s mouth, and their saliva can also contain parasites. We don’t recommend letting your dog lick your face or share you food, and it’s a good idea to wash your hands after a dog has licked them.
Myth: A Purring Cat Is A Happy Cat
In general, purring does mean a cat is happy, but cats may also purr when they’re stressed or sick. Purring may be a self-soothing mechanism that helps cats comfort themselves when they’re in pain or nervous.
